Beach Cleans and much, MUCH More!
As the weather finally appears to be breaking...

As the weather finally appears to be breaking we’ll all be thinking about the things we want and hope to do in the coming months.

Here at Coast Care were certainly no different!

The winter and early spring has kept us busy in so many ways not least of all dealing with the impact of the “Beast from the East”.

Now with spring finally poking its head above the horizon and the lighter nights well and truly with us, it’s very much time for Coast Care to push on with the some of the 46 targets other than looking after our wonderful beaches!

Opportunities in the built, historic and natural environments along our incredible coast mean that there really is something for everyone.

Coast Care covers the area of the Northumberland Coast AONB and its hinterland so there is so much to do and so many opportunities to make a difference volunteering for the project.

We currently offer 9 different volunteer roles:

  • Heritage at Risk Monitor
  • Photographer
  • Administrator
  • Coast Care Intern
  • Wildlife Surveyor
  • Wildlife Support Officer
  • Practical Conservationist
  • Site Warden
  • Guide/Walk Leader

These roles cover our 47 project targets and mean that the project is accessible to everyone.

Here’s a few facts and figures to help whet your appetite for what we’ll be aiming to achieve in the coming months across some of our volunteer roles.

Heritage at Risk Monitor

Historic England’s Heritage at Risk register details the Grade I, Grade II*, Scheduled Ancient Monuments and Conservation Areas across England most in need of help. Unfortunately the Coast Care project area is home to 21 items on the register. When you find out that 1 of those is the Berwick-upon-Tweed Conservation Area which includes no less than 4 Scheduled Ancient Monuments and 262 Listed Buildings you see the size of the task! Producing an accurate and regular monitoring report will really help us to protect these important parts of our history. With places on the Heritage at Risk register from Amble to Berwick there’ll almost certainly be one close to you!

Photographer

The historic, built and natural environment along the coast is forever changing. The only way to accurately record this is through photography. Again there is much to do from historic buildings to coastal erosion. Not only will your efforts help record changes but they’ll also help organisations and individuals plan for the future.

Administrator

Whether your skills are administration, social media or communication based we’ll definitely have a role where you can make a great impact. Recording our work accurately and efficiently is key to our success and require really sound admin skills. Social media is a fantastic tool for getting our message across and something we’re committed to making the most of. Excellent face to face communicators can help us spread our message to groups and individuals and most importantly help to recruit more volunteers.

"I met some wonderful people and really felt that my work helped make a difference to my local area."
