Turning the tide on litter

Volunteers are set to replicate a study on marine litter that was performed in 2007. The study was undertaken to determine the extent of marine litter in Northumberland and to discover the main sources. Over the next year, there will be 4 surveys on each beach between Berwick upon Tweed and Amble. Comparing the results to the previous study will help to determine what and who are the main sources of marine litter.

The 2017/2018 survey is organised by the Northumberland Coast Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB) Partnership and is funded by a grant from Community Foundation's Local Environmental Action Fund (LEAF). Muckle LLP, a leading commercial law firm based in Newcastle upon Tyne, have supported LEAF and specifically this project.

Volunteers, supported by Coast Care staff, will record every single piece of litter discovered in the survey areas. This will feed into the national database held by the Marine Conservation Society. Coast Care is searching for more volunteers to participate in the marine litter survey. They are running 2 training sessions to discuss the survey in more details:

Tuesday 21th of November, Seahouses HUB, 7-8pm

Thursday 30th of November, Boulmer village hall, 7-8pm
