Practical Conservationist

Responsibilities

1. Working as part of a team to carry out practical conservation tasks including habitat management/restoration; removing invasive species (vegetation); improving public access to local sites(footpath clearance, constructing benches, stiles, gates, installing waymarkers etc.)

2. Using, cleaning and maintaining hand tools and power tools/specialist tools (training provided).

3. Supporting other Coast Care volunteers

Existing skills & Experience needed

Commitment to working outdoors in all weathers - Essential

Physically able to carry out practical tasks (details provided in advance) - Essential

Risk assessment and health & safety training (provided by Coast Care) - Essential

Record volunteering on "Better Impact" (volunteer database, training provided)- Essential

Skills Develeopment offered

  • Training in risk assessment and health & safety
  • First aid training depending on commitment and availability
  • 'On task training' in use of tools, practical conservation techniques/practice, ID skills
  • Specialist heritage skills training
  • Machinery training (e.g. strimmer/brushcutter) depending on commitment and availability
  • Opportunity to attend volunteer networking days hosted by Coast Care and partner organisations
  • Opportunity to build experience for career development

Support Available

  • Personal protective equipment will be provided
  • Support and advice will be provided by project and partner staff

Time Commitment Needed

Flexible volunteer hours. Some activities may be performed regularly (e.g. during growing season). Activities can be booked via Better Impact. Regular commitment is required for volunteers who wish to benefit from training courses.

Any other relevant information

  • All volunteers are expected to adhere to health & safety and other policy requirements
  • Activities usually continue in poor weather – please bring appropriate clothing
  • Volunteers may work with support workers as appropriate
  • There may be limited access to facilities – please bring a packed lunch and drinks
