Piri Piri Burr Removal on the Dunes Continues
Piri Piri burr Volunteer work parties continue in partnership with the Space for Shorebirds team.

We have been out continuing our efforts with the Coast Care volunteers to reduce and remove Piri Piri burr from the dunes systems along the Northumberland Coast. In partnership with the Space for Shorebirds team who have been out mapping Piri Piri using GIS software we have targeted high transmission areas and areas where the invasive weed is encroaching on some of our most fragile and ecologically rich dune habitats. We have spent time this week working at Bamburgh and the beautifully floristically diverse Cocklawburn beach dunes removing an impressive 58kg of weed across sites. We continue to get interest and appreciation from beach users and visitors on what we are doing crouched in amongst the dunes, which raises awareness of how this plant transmits as well as appreciation for our efforts. If your visiting the beach, check yourself and your pooch before you leave for the burrs!
