Introducing Emma, our new Volunteering and Access Officer!

I’m Emma Wilson, the new Volunteering and Access Officer for the Northumberland Coast AONB, and I manage our team of Coast Care volunteers.I am indeed privileged, as they are an exceptional group of people who give up their valued timeand each bring their unique skills, ideas andexperience to the CoastCare community. They support us to protect, preserve, and improve this beautiful area in which we live.I’m a proud Northumbrianand since I was a youngchild, I’ve explored the beaches, thenooks and crannies, the rivers and the rock pools of our stunning county. I’m a keen walker and kayaker, and I enjoy seeing the coastline from the water. The diversity of ourshorebirds, marine and wildlife neverceases to hold me in awe.

Professionally, I’ve enjoyed a career in Education and Skills spanning 22 years. During that time, I’ve led and mentored groups of young people on enriching educational and activity-basedtrips both abroad and locally. I’ve supported engagement in the Duke of Edinburgh’sAward, cycling trips and water-based challenges, together creatingthe most memorable experiences.

I’vealways been keen to encourage people to connect with nature, not only for proven wellbeing and educational benefits, but to ignitea sense of adventure and most importantly, to nurture future naturalists and conservationists, who are much needed in our changing world.

I’m a contributor to the Country Parks team, supportingthe nature reserve, woodland and lake maintenance, accessibility, beach health, events and visitor informationin respect to the country code.

They say ‘we are a sum of our experiences’, so it’s nowonder my path has led me here, to the Northumberland Coast AONB team!

My goal for the year ahead is to continue to build positive community and inter-agency relationships, toidentify and support the delivery of varied and enriching projects to the advantage of conserving our coastline and heritage, but alsoto bring a sense of achievementand belonging to our volunteers.I want towelcome new people and tocreate inclusive and accessible opportunities for all ages and abilities, andto re-ignite our Young Rangers community.

See you at the beach!

Emma
